Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal domain extension is the only one intended for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level domains remained functional.
