More and more people use mobile gadgets to access the Internet, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is steadily increasing. To meet this demand, the body that administrates the generic domain name extensions, ICANN, launched the dot MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the notion behind this TLD is that all websites that use it are required to comply with special terms. In other words, all dot MOBI websites need to be built to be accessed properly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” established by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry. These involve how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have induced some concerns due to the fact that the TLD is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be created in such a way as to be opened by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
